On New Year's Eve, celebrations began for the 150th anniversary of Canada's Confederation. Over the course of 2017, special events and festivities will be taking place all over the country to celebrate everything that Canada has to offer.
Here are just a few of the exciting events planned for this year:
1. National Flag of Canada Day
The Canadian flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill on February 15, 1965. On this day, citizens are encouraged to organize their own events and participate in the "Share Your Moment With The Flag" challenge, using the hashtag #CanadianFlag.
2. The Walrus Talks: Conversations About Canada
From March 1 to June 1, 2017, The Walrus Foundation will be hosting talks in every province and territory. These talks will focus on how we can make Canada better and will feature 50 members of the Order of Canada along with 50 youth leaders.
3. National Canadian Film Day 150
On April 19, 2017, free events will be hosted in every province and territory showcasing great Canadian movies and talent. Movies will be broadcast, posted online, and featured at over 600 screenings. Organisers are saying that this is going to be one of biggest film festivals ever.
4. Bio Blitz Canada 150
This year, the Canadian Wildlife Foundation will be hosting 35 Bio Blitzes across the country. Scientists and the public will be working together to document the species found from coast to coast to explore and commemorate Canada's rich biodiversity.
5. Canada Day
Celebrations for Canada Day on July 1st are guaranteed to be memorable. In Ottawa, CIBC and Ottawa 2017 will be celebrating at the Shaw Centre. This will be Canada's biggest Canada Day celebration yet, with many surprises still in store for everyone.
